One time in 6th grade, (after getting ready for an hour before the game) I sat with friends at the top of the bleachers at the varsity basketball game. BC had asked me out earlier that week + rumor had it he was going to hold my hand tonight. AND HE DID. But I will never forget how fast my heart sank to the floor when I saw my Dad turn around from the flight of bleachers below + peek his head above the ledge so he could see me. Beyond busted. I still get sick to my stomach when I think about it + I think that may be the last time I ever held a boy’s hand in public, until now. Don’t let me paint the wrong picture of myself – I was into boys, I just didn’t give it away publicly.
