A couple of years ago, I told Jon that I wanted try my hand at film photography. You’d think that I had punched him in the…armpit? Like, what the heck. He was both confused + totally amused. For Christmas that year I got a new camera. This camera. Notice, it’s not film. Along with it came a note explaining that if I really wanted to give film a shot, he would fully support me. Jon is levelheaded + logical. Traits I have always admired in him. He often knows me better than I know myself. He understands that film completely amazes me. We’re talking bow down, I don’t comprehend this for one second, my mind is blown type of amazement. He also knows that I don’t really have the time nor the patience to wrap my busy brain around it right now. With those feelings out on the table, I truly enjoy taking pictures of my sweet boys + hope that film will make its way to the top of my to-do list someday.

Samantha Kelley is very definitely a knock your face off film photographer who I envy every time I click over to her website. Can you imagine not seeing a single picture until it comes back from the lab? Hello, anxiety city — you really gotta know your crap. To me, film is magic. Pure magic. I’ve wanted to give it a shot with our little family for as long as I can remember, BUT, to be completely honest with you, I had 2 reservations about it:

1. The energy level of  my boys + the their attention span when it comes to family pictures.
2. The price tag.

Here I am, after our first experience with film + I will tell you straight up — I don’t regret it for one single second. Not only did Sam capture our love so gracefully, she became an instant friend. I love people like that. They were destined to be photographers because we all know how potentially awkward lifestyle photos can be. These pictures are priceless to me. I don’t think I have ever loved a roll of black + white film so much in my life. Such raw, grainy, imperfectly perfect emotion that portrays our love just the way it is. I can’t describe my love for these boys with words, I’ve tried. They are my world. I love them so much. We will cherish these pictures in our home forever forever forever + forever ever.

Love you, Sam girl. Thank you for capturing my little circus on film.

  1. These are beautiful! And I feel the same way about film. It is so creamy and delicate and wonderful, and I actually just bought my first film camera.
Nervous and excited to learn about it and see how my images come out. Can’t wait to see your photos when you take the leap! 🙂
