Top 10 things to do in Northern California

Jon grew up going to Redding, California to visit his cousins in the summer time. But for the rest of us, it was our first time visiting this part of Northern California. The views were breathtaking!

We flew into Sacramento, rented a car + drove to Redding. already on your bucket list, add it. Soooooo, so worth it. We flew, but from Utah it isn’t too bad of a drive — around 10 hours. In Redding we stayed at the Sheraton, which is right next to the Sundial Bridge. In Tahoe we stayed at the Lake Tahoe Resort. If you’re interested in a more outdoor experience or to save on hotels, they have an incredible amount of beautiful camping spots!

We got so many recommendations from all of you – – – THANK YOU! We have noted the ones we didn’t get to for our next trip. Happy to list them at the end of this post! But we wanted to share a few of our favorite kid friendly activities in Northern California.

REDDING, CALIFORNIA:

The small town, mountain-town feel brought all kinds of nostalgia. I loved that we had quick access to Chipotle + ma + pa diners.

HOTEL : Sheraton by Sundial Bridge

The pool backs up to the new Turtle Bay playground. Super clean + room service on point. It’s an incredible location + walking distance from beautiful hiking trails : get the avocado toast at the Mosiac restaurant next door + thank me later!

✖️Shasta Caverns : we did the tour. So worth it! You take a ferry across Shasta lake, pull into a pine tree lined dock that looks straight from a romance novel, then hop on a bus up to the cavern! FUN FACT: the difference in a cave + cavern is if they have a seperate entrance + exit. Cave’s have one way in, you use the same way to get out. This cavern was full of stalagmite crystals that have been there for millions of years! You follow the guide in one way, then exit out the other side. The tour guide had a flashlight so they are not required – – but I’d suggest bringing your camera + a bottle of water. The caverns are constantly 58 degrees with a high humidity level of 90 to 95%. This raises the temperature to about 68 to 72 degrees. Consider the current outside weather + be sure you wear comfortable shoes, since the tour includes extensive walking and stair climbing. I tied this sweatshirt around my waist + the boys didn’t want or need one. They don’t get cold as easily. No climbing or crawling is required. I get claustrophobic easily, but it wasn’t a problem! The passages are the same size as a hallway + the rooms are generally very open. The kids loved it! Strollers nor backpacks are allowed. I wore my fanny pack + didn’t have a problem. Check out my highlight bubble ‘cali’ to see more video of this adventure!

✖️Lake Shasta : pack a picnic + some sunscreen. the kids had so much fun playing in the sand!

✖️Burney Falls Hike : bring your camera! Super easy, (stair) hike down to a stunning waterfall! The big boys were able to hike easy + we carried Jack in our carrier. Sometimes Rigg. 🙂

✖️ Sundial Bridge : Suuuch a breathtaking stop. Like I mentioned, we stayed right near the bridge so we got to see it around the clock. I’d say go at sunset. It lights up + because we were there over the weekend, there was live music + food trucks celebrating the weekend! It was built/opened right around July 4th, so we heard that’s an especially magical time for a visit.

✖️Exploration at Turtle Bay : A MUST DO if you are traveling with kids. Think discovery museum on steroids. They have live animal encounters that you can book (we got to hang out with the sweetest Beaver names Timber). They had a goosebumps exhibit, a butterfly exhibit + the wittiest little animal show out in their amphitheater that left us smiling all day. They just had their soft opening for their new playground. I sincerely appreciate playgrounds built with INTENTION + heart. The overgrown trees + tallest slide in the valley. The boys could have stayed here all day! Bring sunscreen + water!

ROADTRIP FROM SACRAMENTO TO LAKE TAHOE! The drive is beautiful + only takes about 4 hours.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA

I’ve been volunteering to drive on road trips! Ever since my trip to South Carolina, I have a car sick fear. You’ve all heard that I’ve dreamed about coming to Lake Tahoe my whole life + guys the water is soooo blue + clear. Seriously breathtaking! Stop at along the way!

HOTEL : Lake Tahoe Resort :

It’s located on the South side of town and is in walking distance to town – shops, restaurants + the lake. we recommend snagging a scooter! I would totally stay here again!

✖️Kayaking/Paddle boarding at ***** : the best way to get out on the lake for the day! But leave early if you want a decent parking spot. This beach is connected to

✖️ head into town : we ate at ***** + ******

✖️ Emerald Bay Hike :

✖️ Hike to ***** + rock climb at the top :

✖️ Mini golf at ****** + Jump at ************

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND : missing your flight + having to bunk up in Reno for an extra night.

Some of the recommendations we were given :

Our weekend in the Backcountry + a gift guide for men

JON’S SWEATSHIRT | HAT | JACK’S SHORTS | JACK’S SHOES | LIGHT | RIGG’S JACKET

Even though the overnight lows were 38 this weekend, Juan’s one birthday wish was a weekend camping. I couldn’t believe (+ FULLY SUPPORTED) the boys for picking dirt biking in the mountains over racing at the track!

The last couple years we’ve put a big emphasis on spending more time outdoors. Together! Jon + I run several businesses together, so heading out of service is super refreshing.

Couldn’t not start the birthday off with junk food breakfast in bed. This is a Jon childhood tradition + I love how excited he gets for it. We’ve been doing this intermitten fasting diet, but I was happy it went out the window for BIRTHDAY 🙂

The boys + I had our camping Tupperware at the back door ready to go! I used to spend sooo long packing for a camping trip (and even more time doing laundry when we got back) until I learned to keep it all together in Tupperware. We have been investing in nicer pieces that will last years! Here are some of the items we keep in tow: (score allllll of them on backcountry.com with code GINGER for 15% off your first purchase! – exclusions apply)

01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09 | 10 | 11 | 12

01. Goal Zero Sherpa 50+ Inverter: We love how easy the Goal Zero Sherpa 50+ is to pack – – – it’s super lightweight and small. We use it to charge our tablets + phones. You can recharge with solar during the day. If you’re trying to charge laptops I would suggest snagging the Sherpa 100.

02. Crank Brothers Multi-19 Tool: I’m not the most techy when it comes to tools, but I do know whenever Juan pulls this out, he saves the day. It has a few wrenches + screw drivers on it and folds down super small to fit in a pocket. Perfect for on the trail.

03. Goal Zero Lighthouse: We looooooooove this light. It illuminates so bright + we can use it for extra charing ports. You can even recharge it with the hand crank on the back. Folds down super small and easy to bring with you for a bathroom break in middle of the night or to hang and light up the campsite at night.

04. Dakine Hip Pack: Jon is obssessed with Fanny Packs! Did you know we even wore them at our wedding? True story. He wore this new DAKINE one riding with the boys this weekend. Holds his phone + sunscreen just fine! Juan has mountain biking on his mind + told me he plans to really break it in this summer! I told him he better be taking hat orders at Magnolia first 🙂

05. Goal Zero Nomad 14+ Solar Panels: You can charge your devices right from the sun! Soooooo freaking cool. You can pack it flat in your backpack for hikes, mountain biking, at the lake or anytime you need a charge from the sun!

06. Therm-A-Rest Hanging Kit: this kit allows your to hang your hammocks in the wild. It easily goes around a tree + is perfect solution for hammocking outdoors.

07. Backcountry x Black Diamond Stone Garden Crag Backpack: This backpack is exclusive to Backcountry and is the perfect bag for a climber. Jon + I climbed a ton while dating and he even has a climbing wall in the office. We’ve had a goal to make it outdoor more this year to climb + this backpack has a spot for all the climbing gear – – – I mean ALLLLLL of it + keeps it super organized. Win win.

JACKET | PANTS

08. Black Diamond Climbing Shoe: Jonah has been wanting to get Jon some new shoes, so this was what he picked for birthday! His face lit up when he gave them to him this weekend. Juan was stoked on how comfortable they are! You want your climbing shoe to be SNUG, you can size up a half size but wouldn’t recommend going further than that. This pair is perfect for beginner + intermediate climbers.

09. Helinox Camp Chair: I was shocked how small these chairs packed down but also how comfortable they were. Jack claimed it real quick 🙂 Hoping to get one for each of us as they fold into a backpack so easily.

10. Black Diamond Head Lamp: The boys all fight over who gets to wear the headlamp! This one is waterproof so it’s ready for any weather.

11. Helinox Camp Table: This table weighs just over 2 pounds and is super easy to fold up and pack, can you tell we’re all about convenience? It’s super nice to set up right outside the van/tent/or trailer to assemble lunches or play games on.

12. Goal Zero Yeti: This one is still on Jon’s wishlist. Hoping to get one this fall! We call it the Rolls Royce of camping solar chargers + want it for the sprinter in a bad way!

I didn’t put my order in quick enough to ship, so I shopped online then snagged our birthday goodies on the way out of town in person at their warehouse in west valley! Backcountry does also offer express shipping! Snag something in time for Father’s Day for 15% off with code: GINGER (exclusions apply). I highly suggest stopping in there if you’re a Utah Local! They have a beautiful showroom + most things in stock ready to rock! xx

Fun Summer Activities for kids + how to keep White Nike Clothes WHITE, while you’re at it!

To preface this post, when we signed with the talent agency that represents our family, I told them that NIKE was my ultimate dream collaboration/partnership. This has been 3 years in the making + I’m truly grateful lunch myself giddy over this opportunity to work with NIKE.

tap + to shop our look

WORK HARD + BE NICE TO PEOPLE! Oh, + write down the goals that feel too good to be true. We are partnering with Nike to introduce their SUMMER WHITES line. I’ve been a closet tomboy all my life + have worn Nike around town since the womb. The boys ask to wear their Nike shorts everrrrrryday + Jon sports Nike SB at the skate park. Nike is a Parrish family fave through and through.

We’re one week into summer + I’m quickly discovering that I’m not the only Mom wondering how to keep these hoodlums out of trouble until school starts back up. We spend a lot of time outdoors + have plans to spend the majority of our summer out there! Nike helps keep us cool in the Utah heat.

Nike

30 things to do this Summer that don’t take a lot of planning + include comfy clothes 🙂

  • Stovetop smores. Don’t forget to add a strawberry!
  • Lemonade Stand
  • Leave pre made happy notes on windshield
  • go find find a new park you’ve never been to
  • Treasure Hunt – burn the edges of the pirate map you draw for a real WOW factor
  • freeze toys (we use action figures) in a bowl of water, let them chisel them out
  • Go on a bike ride
  • Play Simon Says, Charades, hopscotch, or annie-I-over
  • Go to a matinee
  • wash the car +/or wash bikes
  • build legos
  • make muffins from scratch
  • watch older home videos
  • splash pad day : do a quick Google splash pads near you search if you haven’t ever been to one – most of them that we’ve been to are free or very inexpensive
  • write a letter + mail it to grandma + grandpa or cousins
  • hike Adam’s canyon
  • paint ice in the sink or in a bucket outside
  • play around the world on basketball hoop
  • make a fort, take turns reading books in it
  • try one of these bike games
  • put on a play or a talent show (make sure to recruit neighbors to participate + all the parents to watch
  • glow sticks + night games — kick the can | flashlight tag | ghost in the graveyard
  • visit the fire department
  • go to the drive in movie theater | we go to the one on redwood road in slc. pack into the back of a truck or jeep or bring lawn chairs + invite your friends

I AM ALLL here for white on white, but would you believe me if I told you I started my period when I tried on my white pants for the first time. GO FIGURE. I’ve gotta come up with a BTS video to show our daily chaos in real life because I still can’t believe it most of the time + I live here.

Note to self: Keep a bottle of carpet cleaner with you, it took blood out in an instant without water!

Kids don’t need a lot to be happy. They need a happy mom to show them what it means to be a good person to myself + to others. I set out to master one skill for summer + that is to plan ahead more consistently. It’s not my strong suit, but when I do plan, I’m sooo glad I did.

How to Style Wide Leg Jeans

SWEATSHIRT | PANTS | SHOES

I love wearing wide leg pants during the summer. The looser feel makes it cooler + this year I’ve been throwing in some linen favorites — perfectly lightweight for summer.

Pair them with a graphic tee tucked in, a basic crop top or a sweatshirt for a cooler afternoons. Shoes my go-to is my white converse, but once the heat really hits they make me claustrophobic. Ha! You’ll see me in vans or slides all summer long!

FAMILY

What to pack for A family trip to Moab!

. . . most people call it MOAB, we call it our back yard . . . .

SWIMSUIT | SHOES | JONAH’S HAT
SUNGLASSES | SWIM | PANTS | SHOES

It’s funny how so often I find myself searching all over the country or world for our next adventure, when we have sooooo many places to explore here in Utah. Since working with Backcountry we’ve taken the time to explore our own backyard more + man we love it! Wish we would have started sooner!

Backcountry gave us a promo code, so you could shop all our gear! Get 15% off your first purchase with code: GINGER —- exclusions apply.

JON’S HAT | JON’S SHIRT | JON’S SHOES |JON’S SUNGLASSES | JON’S SWIM | JACK’S HAT | JACK’S SWIM

Moab gets HOT in the summertime, so we love to go in the Spring or Fall. It does get busy, especially on holiday weekends so be sure to book early. Our biggest tip is to pack smart. Here’s an example, our North Face Jackets pack small, are super light and are cool enough to wear when temperatures aren’t freezing, but can be layered with a long sleeve and keep you super warm. + you can shop all our gear for 15% off with code: GINGER

SHOES | JON’S SHOES | KIDS SHOES | KIDS SWIM

HERE’S OUR FULL PACKING LIST: be sure to snag 15% off your first Backcountry purchase, with code: GINGER

  • BACKPACKS: Camel backs for hiking + something to carry the little ones in for when their legs get tired. We love our Thule pack, there’s tons of room for Jack + there’s lots of storage pockets for stashing our lunch!
  • SWIMSUITS: there isn’t really a lake in MOAB, but plenty of hikes end in water + they end up dumping water on their head most of the time. Moab get’s hooottttttt so wearing your swimsuit while hiking will help keep you cooler + pack less.
  • HIKING SHOES: We prefer to bring comfy shoes that are waterproof. The boys love these Nike Waterproof sandals and Jon + I love our Teva’s.
  • RASH GUARDS: If we’re going to be out in the sun all day, I like to boys to wear rash guards, much easier than re-applying sunscreen every couple hours.
  • SHORTS: that work for hiking or swimming. We all love the Patagonia baggies, but I also snagged this one for Jack + we’re obsessed.
  • BEACH TOWELS: I dig round towels if you can’t tell 🙂 Perfect for picnicking, drying off or hanging out on the trail. This one doubled as a tablecloth for dinner!
  • SUNGLASSES: I get a headache if I’m outside too long without my sunglasses. This is the RAEN pair I brought + Jon’s all about the extra sun coverage!
  • If you’re not staying in a van or trailer, be sure to pack a TENT that accommodates your party. We piled in the enclosed trailer on a blow up mattress.
  • HAMMOCKS: we put them up first thing under the sun shade. Spent our mid-day naps there + jack figured out how to jump off the table + swing on it.
  • YETI COOLER: we hit up Walmart just off the Spanish Fork exit before you head up the canyon. We stock up on snacks, water + simple lunch food for while we’re camping. Don’t forget the Starburst to roast over the fire.
  • SUNSCREEN + CHAPSTICK WITH SPF: When you’re camping you’re outside literally sun up to sun down, so don’t forget to protect your skin.
  • HATS: we love these SPF waterproof caps for the boys. A perfect way to stay cool + keep the sun off your face all day. I brought this one for me.
  • CAMERA: I shoot with my canon camera, but we also just snagged a GoPro for Hawaii + it’s been perfect for an adventure camera through trails + swimming holes.
  • RAIN JACKETS: this time of year is unpredictable, I brought our rain jackets + they pack super light!
  • FIREWOOD + TARP: Including matches or whatever you need to start a fire. Bring a tarp to cover your fire wood if it rains!
  • GLOW STICKS: not mandatory but the boys sure have fun playing with them when the sun goes down + it helps us keep an eye on them but be able to have adult conversations by the fire!
  • FIRST AID KIT + HAND SANITIZER: include moleskin + toe nail clippers because I swear someone jams their toe every trip. For hand sanitizer you could even bring an extra cooler with washing water!
  • BIKES: Jon forgot the boys helmets so you better believe I’m making them wear their full face motorcycle helmets all weekend! When we don’t forget them at home, the boys favorite helmets are Nutcase, they can do them up themselves.
  • TOILETRIES: #1 on mama’s checklist. Deodorant, Face Wipes, WIPES for everything messy + toothbushes!
  • CAMP CHAIRS: Easy to throw in, since they pack down so small + makes hanging out by the fire a lot more comfy!
  • TP: we had a bathroom (never before used campsite) so it was stocked but you never know + it’s better to be safe.
  • SAND TOYS: if you pack them, they’ll play them. the kids will play in the sand all day long. A major perk of being out of service + away from screens!!
  • GRANOLA BARS: easy to pack on the trail or in the car for snacks all along your adventure!
  • WATER BOTTLE: We love to bring our own water bottles so we aren’t going through 1 gazillion plastic bottles, plus it keeps it cooler in the heat of the day!

5 THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE PARRISH’S

I LOVE learning random facts about people. These small differences + habits are what make us unique. Here are a few random facts about us that we realized while eating shaved ice at a little hut in Hawaii.

  • We prefer acai over ice cream any day of the week.
  • We’re gummy snobs + get Black Forest Gummy Bears every chance we get. They’re our on-the-go snack whether we’re running errands, road tripping, spending the day at the pool or on the airplane. And they’re made with real ingredients like real fruit juice and colors from natural sources, so Jon + I feel good about giving them to the kids.PRO TIP: Costco now has gummy bears in smaller packs. We grabbed some before we left for Hawaii for each of our carry-ons. Jon’s genius idea to put them on our shaved ice in Hawaii was game changing.
  • I have 5 siblings – – – 3 younger sisters + 1 older brother. We grew up in Logan, Utah.
  • We love meeting new people. Met a new friend in Hawaii. His name was Havier, he’s from Oregon + misses his family. Grandma bought him a shaved ice!
  • Jon is a sunscreen freak + it has rubbed off on me. I don’t believe in laying out anymore. I spray tan + we use SPF 100000. For the boys we have them wear rash guards.

What’s something unique about yourself or your family?
