My focus as a #BOYMOM this year, has been confidence. I feel this is a roll-over topic that I’ll always be striving for in our lives, but I feel responsible as their mother to help plant the roots. Wanted to share a few focus points during this pivotal time of Rigg’s education (aka starting kindergarten) that we are working on as parents to instill a confident home life
- family dinner : we try our best to eat dinner together as a family each night. like actually sit down together + eat. seems simple, but i’m sure it’s only going to get less + less easy to do as the boys grow. we go around the table + share our highs + lows.
- going to each other’s games : whether that be juan’s indoor soccer league, a motocross race, jonah’s basketball camp, or rigg’s puppet show talent parade, i refuse to give them the choice of attending when they are this young. when we were first married, jon wasn’t into girls volleyball. but it still killed me to miss my sisters games + he grew to love going. I pray every day that my boys are each other’s biggest support group. I want them to cheer each other on + I know they learn by example. I know they’ll naturally compete, but I hope they are able to bring each other up + be proud of their successes TOGETHER. Does that even make sense? Not sure, but it does in my head + I think this all starts by all attending each others events as much as we can. wrote down my thoughts about sibling rivalry here.
- getting outdoors : the easiest way to get away from screen time, is to get away from it altogether. we DO watch TV in the Parrish household, I don’t want it to ever seem like we don’t. In fact, the boys would chose to play video games + watch TV all day if they could. But getting outside is never a fight (just more work on my part) + a great way to unplug.
- let them do their thing : what if strong willed is confident. each of my boys are soooo different, but I try my best to let them keep their personality instead of changing it. turn the hard worst traits toward the future + let their best qualities shine through.
- teaching manners, respect + self discipline : #1 Priority in our household – MANNERS. It’s the one that I often wonder if I’m making any progress, but no matter how many time I have to tell Rigg to put his dang plate in the sink after dinner, I believe that one day it’ll sink.
- shoes without ties for kindergarten: i dunno when your kids learned to tie their shoes + this might just be me putting it off longer, but finding easy to slip on shoes with no tie or velcro has been a good way to avoid a nice lil’ confidence shatter. set them up for success if there’s a plan B option!
Thought it might be helpful to share some of the NSALE pieces that are still in stock that we bought for back to school! Prices go back up in ONE WEEK, so the count down is on. If you see your size, snag it up. Nordstrom offers free shipping + free returns.
