the perfect guide for dressing up (or down) on NYE
What I think NYE will look like!vs reality – snuggled up at home with the boys
I always have high expectations for NYE + then always feel a little disappointed when we end up at home, trying to hold our eyes open until midnight.
This year to start the new year off right + embracing this chapter of our lives + gonna be totally content at home, cozied up next to my boyfriends. I know this won’t last forever + I’ll miss it when it’s gone!
Whether you’re going out or staying in, I’m sharing a few of my favorite NYE looks!
Orrrrrr how to trick them into thinking dressing up is cool.
The boys are happiest in their soft clothes (comfies) + I can’t blame them. SAME! But sometimes their “soft” clothes just don’t cut it. Here are a few tricks that has worked for me + the boys when it comes to getting dressed for church or holiday parties!
LET THEM PICK SOMETHING OUT :
Whether it be a small detail like a tie or their socks, let them add something they’re excited about + put a huge emphasis on that part of the outfit. If they’re choosing their socks, FOCUS ON THE SOCKS! Talk about how cool they are, while you are getting them dressed into their clothes they may not be as excited about. It’s a good distraction + will make dressing up fun!
MAKE COMFIES LOOK NICE :
Jack’s in a baggy overall set. They’re nice looking so the baggier fit isn’t such a bad thing! This made it extra comfy for him + they’re still soft corduroy material so it doesn’t restrict him from running around.
Jonah’s in sweats in these pictures. The trick was finding sweats that were fitted enough that they look more like pants instead of a typical sweat. I added in a nice looking shirt (still comfortable) with solid colored high tops + wahhhhla we’ve got a winner.
Rigg we found comfy chino pants that were easy to move around in with his comfiest sneakers (converse) and a soft sweatshirt that isn’t too heavy!
Throwing a nice jacket or shoes with more casual clothes will instantly dress up an outfit!
BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES :
If you’re planning to hang around after dinner or the event you’re going to, let them change into their basketball shorts or sweats right after so they can run around + feel more like themselves! Or for the car ride home. They may be so comfy that they’ll stick with the clothes they wore there!
Some of my favorite stores to shop for boys basics + nicer clothes are
Getting outside especially when you hate being Cold
Here’s the thing, I’ve lived in UTAH my entire life. We know that winters here are COLD. Growing up in Logan, it’s even colder – – – I’m still caught off guard by it each time it arrives. Ironically enough – I bath every night just to get warm.
I get cold + stay cold! I don’t love the cold, never have + probably never will. I thought I’d rather cozy up inside with my feet on the heater – – – which don’t get me wrong I do love, but turns out getting outdoors gives me sooooo much joy.
After attending a Backcountry retreat in the Spring, I found a new love for the mission behind this local brand. Jon has always been outdoorsy. Me, not so much. You’ll find a hundred quotes about choosing to love life + then it will love you right back – apply any of them here.
Choosing a new mindset this year + pretty freaking stoked to see what adventures it takes us on. But also one tip : LAYER UP! Makes the cold less miserable so you’re able to enjoy the simple, beautiful outdoor moments more.
UTAH IN THE WINTER is cold, but holy crap it is B E A U T I F U L.
I chose this base layer from Backcountry to keep me warm underneath my snow suit. I love going with a one piece so no skin will ever be exposed for snow to sneak in. It even has a zipper so you can go to the bathroom! WHATTT?!!!
When choosing a snow suit I go for one that is supppper warm so I can enjoy being outdoors. I love monochromatic so going with a jumpsuit or colored set is my favorite. I snagged this Patagonia one + loooooove the color – – – it’s Sunset Orange + I got an XS in the top + bottom.
There’s even still time to snag last minute gifts too!
Yep, The Parrish Place is overdue for some more hands in the kitchen. We are hoping to add a few interns to our team. We have a lot of fun over here. I love gift giving. I love wrapping them, delivering them, allll of it! But with so many people to buy for it can be totally overwhelming. This year I finished shopping for the boys earlier than I ever have, so it gave me a little more time to focus on neighbor / friend gifts.
I love giving something cozy – like a beanie or socks + gifting it with a treat from Trader Joe’s! They also have the yummiest treats + always look cute! Tie a unique ribbon around it or put it in a clear bag + booomshakalaka you’re done! A cute, easy gift that doesn’t take a ton of time.
If you’re getting a Gigi Pip beanie you can get FREE shipping with code : GPARRISH or you can even snag one from Target for a couple bucks if you’re gifting for more people!
I’ve been making intentional efforts in my personal style. Trying to focus on the quality of the products I purchase, rather than the fast fashion that doesn’t feel as timeless + is often looked at as more more more. Or impulse buys. With the intention of creating a more timeless closet, I began the year by getting rid of allllll the shoes I didn’t wear. And bags. For whatever reason I keeeep allllll the bags + shoes always. But only wear like 3.
Shopping smarter doesn’t always have to come with a higher price tag. The jeans I have on here are the ones I found on AMAZON for like $30 bucks. Don’t think you need to update your entire wardrobe at once. That’s not setting anyone up for success. Want to give you a few tips + things to look for if you’re interested in curating your own closet with more timeless pieces that you LOVE. There are plenty of finds to be found at estate sales + vintage thrift shops. I don’t have the time to hunt like I used to, so I appreciate the shops who have kept true to foundational pieces. Start small. Dedicate a few days to pulling EVERYTHING out of your closet + rebuild with pieces you have worn more than four or five times.
Here are a few of my favorite shops to buy from. I think they curate +/or design thes types of investment pieces that last:
ABLE – I’ve had the same wallet from them for 4 years now. currently on sale for $45 + GINGER25 makes it 33.75 with freee shipping. gasp! INSANE! Their pieces only get better with age. This denim jacket is one I plan to keep for my future granddaughters. I sized up to a Large for an oversized fit. Don’t forget to use my code, it expires on Dec. 18
JAMES STREET CO – This pant, cardigan set I ordered was a bit itchy at first, but the more I’ve worn it the more it’s formed to my body. Lots of questions on my pants every time I wear them. You get what you pay for with wool.
TRIBE ALIVE – discovered this brand at Magnolia Silobration a couple years back. We were booth neighbors, I ADORE this company. They sell pieces at Madewell as well. You might recognize these linen white pants that I live in in the summer. Have loved pairing themwith a chunky sweater as it’s cooled down a bit.
EVERLANE : This sherpa sweatshirt is still one of my favorite sweatshirts. I’ve worn + loved it this year as much as I did the last couple.
TRADLANDS : This store has been around since 2012. I am here for the simple, timeless pieces + tailored cuts. I love love the clay in linen.
GIGI PIP: once you invest in a nicer hat you’ll take better care of it + see that it will last you many years from now. you get what you pay for, especially with hats. GPARRISH for free shipping
Whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a washed up cheerleader, an intramural enthusiast, or break a sweat buckling in carseats everyyy freaking time – Nike has something for everyone. I shopped their Black Friday Sale + snagged some Nike Fleece to wear alll winter long + created this gift guide with some of the pieces I found + love.
If you like the easy route, just send this gift guide to anyone who has your name for Christmas! That is, if you love Nike. Make their job easy this year!
Have I been living under a rock? I did not realize that so many albums were available on VINYL! We haven’t had a place for a record player in our condo, but am asking Santa to bring me one for when we move!
