This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Hair Food. The opinions and text are all mine.
For years I told myself I wanted to be healthier. What does that even mean? For me – – – it was energy!! I have come to realize that our mental health is directly related to our gut. To the things we are putting into our bodies every single day. Which for me has been the answer for more energy!
What we put into our bodies isn’t just food. It’s what we put on our face, what we use to wash our hair + bodies, the scents we light around our house + wash our clothes with! THIS IS A THING! The more educated I become, the more simple it is to start today!!
Recovering from a 3 week travel sprint is a bit more rough than I anticipated. Been eating super crappy coming off vacation + china. I lived on skittles + Fanta for a week in China + my body is still confused. Needing a reset. I’m committed hunkering down for a week to get back on track. I’ve never been extreme in dieting or exercising. I’d say I strive hard to be more “aware” of what is going into my body + take continual strides to learn about the ingredients in the things I use. All signs in my life are pointing to a reset!! I’ve slept horribly, eaten even worse + have been sooo tired. You know where it shows most? My hair. My skin. Under my eyes + my ankles.
Excited to dive into Hair health a little deeper today! I went to cosmetology school + this subject is easy for me to get passionate about! 🙂 Hair Food has an aligned outtake on Healthy habits + it means a lot to me. They believe that what you put on your hair is as important as what you eat! This Coconut Milk (which smells heavenly) + was inspired by clean, simple, kitchen-crafted ingredients that you want to put in your hair + none of the things that you don’t.
AKA NO SULFATES, NO PARABENS, NO DYES. NO MINERAL OILS. NO COMPROMISES!
If you get fly away baby hairs, THIS IS OIL IS FOR YOU!! Smooth as a baby’s bottom + no alcohol added in. Which is in the majority of other serum’s I’ve used in my day!
I think the best way to really test a conditioner is to sleep in it for a night. Wash your hair in the shower, just don’t wash out conditioner. Then fully re-wash the next morning! CLEAN IS CLEAN. Build up is build up. I went to hair school + know enough about the genetic make-up of hair to know when something is good for your hair or not. The best part is that you don’t have to be a licensed Hair professional to take care of your hair + not break the bank!!
In fact Hair Food is available on Amazon + is currently 20% off when you use Amazon code: 25HAIRFOOD
BOOOMSHAKALAKA! Read the Amazon reviews for back up 🙂
Thank you, Hair Food for reminding us why reading the labels for your hair are just as important as any other label!! (or finding someone who’s done the homework for you) because it gets the Parrish stamp of approval! 3 cheers to healthier hair, more energy + eating smarter. Sleeping better + living a life motivated to be the best us we can be! If you don’t know where to start, read this post from Kelsey Wells. She sums it up perfectly!
It’s been a WILD few weeks to say the least. We flew to Hawaii with my fam + cut out a few days early to head straight from Hawaii to China. But we had to come back to Seattle, then to LA first. WOOOF. Still not sure how that math worked out. We’re pretty dang tired, but soooo grateful for the memories we’ve made together!
though it might be fun to round up some of my favorite travel items for list of loves this week:
yeti tumbler to keep my water ice cold! I usually bring it along in my suitcase if we’re traveling to an airbnb.
hair clips + hair ties. never, ever leaving the house without them again. Madewell just got this one + adding it to my cart rn.
loopy case so I don’t have to worry about dropping my phone. I may have left it on the airplane — which got miraculously got returned, but filmed while holding it off the boat scanning the hong kong skyline + didn’t drop it. use code: GINGER10 for 10% off.
no secret i love wearing hats everywhere, especially while traveling.
i broke in this Lily Jade camera/diaper bag + LOVED it! for sure would recommend.
beach bag if you’re going on a beach trip! i found a fun new one in a little Chinese market, i’ll show you on stories.
jumpsuits — easy outfit to throw on or traveling in. I got this one for under $40. sold out quick, here are a few other simple options:
favorite colored chapstick to bring on the go, it has SPF.
spray tan machine that I bring on the go (packs super small) + converted all my sisters this trip. order this shower cap + the entire machine fits inside of it to travel with.
airpods. these are a game changer while traveling (+ at the gym)
Never thought the day would come that I would turn down a sponsorship with Disney World. We were suppposedto go this weekend, but I just couldn’t handle another flight. Needing some time to regroup + carry on with life here at home. AKA BUILD A HOUSE! How’s that for a humble brag-fest? They’d definitely be added if I kept up Sweets + sours so carry on. 🙂 Truly hope you all have a beautiful weekend!
The Big Island blew us away! We were lucky enough to get some local suggestions on where to eat, hike + swim! Some of the hikes took some SERIOUS digging + wrong turns until we finally found them, but they all were worth the work.
We’re excited to share all the family friendly beaches and hikes that we found around The Big Island with you guys!
Kid friendly hikes in Kona Hawaii:
NARNIA: soooo this is the hike that I’m nervous to the address to on the internet. IT WAS BREATHTAKINGGG to say the least. Multiple waterfalls we swam in + jumped from. It’s a local secret, it took us some serious hunting to find. With that said, DM me or send me an email, i’ll help you get here.
AKAKA FALLS:
It’s technically a state park + the most mind blowing rainforest we’ve ever seen. Kid friendly stairs + the worlds second biggest waterfall! It’s a short, less than a mile loop trail + will cost you $1/person or $5 car. It cost to walk through, but park outside of the gate + you won’t have to pay to park
POLOLU VALLEY LOOKOUT:
We shared more info about this magical rope swing hike here. but I’m not sure I’ll ever be done sharing the images!
about 2 seconds before that branch snapped on us
Rainbow Falls Lookout:
this was our first hike of the trip. The perfect warm you up hike! It was a drive up, park + you’re basically to the top kind of adventure. After you take a picture in front of it, follow the trail behind the big sign + hike up about half way. Play around in the banyon tree heaven! Oh, + because I know someone will ask, we swung from the vines near the parking lot while we waited for everyone else to get there!
Best Beaches in Kona Hawaii:
MANINI’OWALI BEACH (KUA BAY):
This is the perfect beach for boogie boarding. Clear water, big waves! They said the waves are bigger in the afternoon, but it is a small beach so it gets crowded. We came early so we could get parking + decent sand real estate!
Be sure to lock your car + take your stuff. There seems to be a lot of theft, especially if you’re in a rental car. We didn’t have any problems this time, better safe than sorry!
It’s right across the streets from the Veterans Cemetery + an easily missed road. You can ask Siri to take you there.
KAHALU’U BEACH PARK:
Where we snorkeled. Best snorkeling is in the morning, so be sure to get here early! Bring tevas or some kind of water shoes. Get cream on top of your shave ice (snowcapped), it’s right there by the beach! They do take card ps!
suit | sandals | hat |sunglasses
PUNALU’U:
This is a black sand beach + the locals said they’re ALWAYS turtles here resting in the sand + playing in the surf!
CARL SMITH BEACH:
Perfect for kids. You can wade in clear water . . . no waves + they’re always turtles to swim with! The kids will LOVE it!
NIGHT MANTRA RAY SNORKLE BY HANG LOOSE BOAT TOURS:
One of the coolest things I’ve done in my life! They have lots of times you can go throughout the day. But the pitch black ocean definitely added to the effect. We were sooo proud of Jonah for adventuring with us. Good chance I was more scared than he was!
This cost $120 / person. They gave us a group rate + ended up being about $100 per person. Be sure to call ahead + ask for group rates!
I’m going to round up our favorite eats for another post since this one is already a novel 🙂 Hopefully it offers help to someone visiting the big Island! xx
ahhhhh guys this has been a hard post for me to write + hard category for me to dabble in to. It’s one that I get asked about often but I am in no way a trainer. Sooooo if this kinda stuff isn’t for you, no worries! For the most part attend classes + do what I’m told. But I opened up the sticker question option on IG + decided to answer the real raw version of me!
Sharing workouts stressssses me out + not in the good get out of your comfort zone stress, but holy shiz that would add a lot of stress to my life zone.
So here it is, my workout post with no video at all. I’m not saying the time will never come, but for now my focus here is not working out. But I still wanted to answer some of my most commonly asked questions.
Fitness for me is directly correlated to mental health. So it has become a big focus on my life, as I try to stay healthy + fit to chase around 3 crazy boys! It’s the time in my day I get all to myself + as much as I wouldn’t have believed myself saying this a couple years ago. I LOVE WORKING OUT! I look forward to it everyday! I crave it + enjoy it.
I posted my favorites from the Roolee activewear launch (what I’m wearing in this post), along with a question sticker . . . asking for your workout questions. So here we are!
WHAT IS YOUR WEEKLY WORKOUT ROUTINE? I move my body every single day. I try to get to a one hour class every weekday + fit the stair stepper in if time allows. I found a gym with a day care connected to it. We meet our friends there + the boys enjoy it, too! I take Saturday (most of the time) + Sunday off.
WHAT ARE TYPICAL WORKOUTS YOU DO? I am most motivated by classes. I’m not the most coordinated human on the planet, but I like the energy of working as a team + the classes at the local gym I attend are very much like that. Pilates is a combination of mind meditation + muscle lengthening. I loooove it, but since I moved the location I attend doesn’t offer day care so it’s been a bit trickier to get to consistently. On a good week I go to Pilates 4 times a week + then add in yoga + body combat.
My favorite workouts are slim in 6, (be warned it’s OLD SCHOOL, my friends tease me) PWR with Kelsey Wells + Reformer Pilates.
DO YOU TAKE PRE-WORKOUT? Nope!
FAVORITE MEALS TO EAT?
BREAKFAST: I hard boil eggs in the instant post on Saturday. I love cinnamon oatmeal + daily harvest smoothies. I am a morning work out kinda person, so I typically grab a granola bar on the way to the gym + take a protein shake for the way home. I always try to get protein into my body within 20 minutes of my workout!
LUNCH: this is my hardest meal for sure. I work 2 days a week + try to bring leftovers when possible. I love, love, love salad. Hate cold veggies, but salad of any kind I’ll most likely eat. I keep my Clean Simple Eats recipe book in my jeep + refer to it often for help with what to order at restaurants. I have never counted macros, but her program would be a great place to start.
DINNER: Jon is a grill master + we smoke on the traeger most nights. We have a yummy hommade pizza recipe + love grilling chicken. I am pretty simple, i have 4 or 5 meals that I rotate through.
SNACKS: ohhhh i am a snacker. I learned from my friend Kristin to make smart desert decisions. Save it for the best things, don’t eat the half a cookie, GO FOR THE PIZOOKIE on sunday night! Edamame, CSE Protein Balls, Hard Boiled Eggs, RX Bars are some of my go to snacks.
HOW DO YOU STAY SO LEAN? I try to make high protein food decisions whenever there’s an option! Low carb diet + HIIT training. I have noticed a difference when I started drinking much much more water!
DO YOU LIFT WEIGHTS? Have you tried the SWEAT app? It makes anyone feel like they can life weights!! I love Kelsey Wells PWR program. She also just launched a at home program + I can’t wait to dive in when I get back from China.
I am trying to to be more consistent with weight training. I tend to feel intimidated by it, but my friend Suzie has been teaching me a lot. We are planning to put a home gym in our new house so I’m sure I will be more consistent then.
HOW DO YOU WORKOUT WITH BABIES? I really enjoy BBG with Kayla Itsines. It’s on the SWEAT app as well. I have finished 2 rounds of her program. The Nike App has some really great workout options as well as Kristin Andrus.
When we went on our cruise last fall, Charlotte + I were waking up before our kids to do P90X videos. Had to stopt the video lotsss, but I think if you can keep in perspective that these littles won’t keep little, it helps! Those are some fond memories of mine! the boys usually think it’s fun to join in!
HOW DO YOU FIND TIME? I think you have to make time. I don’t know about you but I don’t have a crap ton of time where I’m just sitting around, with nothing to do. You have to make time to work, make time to do nothing + make time to move your body.
DO YOU COUNT MACROS? I don’t! We also don’t own a scale! I write positive affirmations each Sunday for the week, sticky note them on my bathroom mirror + repeat them to myself each morning + night. Be easier on yourself!! Stick to calf raises in the shower if that’s all the energy you have to give. AND BE OK WITH IT. Life in general is TIRING. I hired a life coach to help get my mind right + I still need sticky note reminders to breath deeper. 🙂 Baby steps!
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A FITNESS PERSON OR DID YOU START WITH A PURPOSE? I grew up in sports! I played soccer all my life + even played on the local team when we lived downtown Salt Lake City. I’ve got some super intense knock-knees + got self conscious about it when it was pointed out on Instagram. Seems weird, but trolls motivated me to get stronger! For myself!!! The physical misconception doesn’t bother me, but I set a goal to love myself exactly as I am so that those words couldn’t bother me. I fell in love with Pilates a couple of years ago + have been loving it ever since.
FAVORITE BOOTY|THIGH WORKOUT? PREFERABLY AT HOME. It’s been a hot sec since I’ve worked out strictly from home. The Nike App is free + i love to use it when I’m short on time or traveling. I am working on a booty, don’t got much back there! Does anyone have a reccomendation? I’m banking on Kelsey pulling through with her PWR home workout. I looove + loathe the stair stepper at my gym. Do leg raises between steps as you do it!
If I missed your question, be sure to ask it here in the comments + I’ll try my best to get keep the conversation going there.
We knew we’d be going on a few hikes + that rain was in the forecast (isn’t it always in Hawaii . . . at least for one day), so we snagged some new rain gear from Backcountry before we left.
The gearheads were AMAZING + walked us through the details about all their technical rain gear + helped us pick the best jackets for packing + staying dry. They were even so nice to give us a Backcountry promo code. Get 15% off your first purchase with code: GINGER
a GoPro. (on sale) It packs down soooo small so it’s easy to take on hikes + the Hero7 is waterproof, so we took it into the waterfalls no prob. we did snag the floaty so the boys wouldn’t lose it in the waves.
snacks + water! there is a Costco in Kona, so we stopped on the way in. Go for the local acai bowl tho, not the costco ones 🙂 (food post coming soon)
water shoes that are also good for hiking! i love wearing tevas + for the boys their birks were great the majority of the trip. On our Popoui Hike down to the rope swings, they wore these little water shoes!
HATS! y’all know we’re a crazy suncreen family by now, but hats are a great way to keep the sun off your face + keep you cooler while out in the heat allllll day.
these leggings are perfect for the rain. They keep the moisture away from your skin + I love the texture. I even wore them on our travel days!
swimsuits! for just in case you run into any beautiful waterfalls or swimming holes along the way, which isn’t too hard to do in Kona! We shared some of our favorite swim here.
a rain protector for your backpack. I loved that we could carry our gear around all day without worrying about it getting ruined by the rain.
You can snag all this gear for 15% off. Use code: GINGER on your first Backcountry purchase.
This hike had an awesome wide trail that was easy for walking, which made it perfect for all the kids. It was sooooo beautiful right along the coast + had the best lookout spots + even had a rope swing with a seat!
I’d recommend packing snacks + a lunch for when you get to the bottom. Don’t stop on the rocks, keep walking to neverland!!! Don’t forget to stop at the local little shave ice hut on your way back down to the main road. Her banana bread will blow your mind!
Another quick trip for doing the Big Island with kids, is Carl Smith Beach. You can wade in clear water . . . no waves + they’re always turtles to swim with! The kids will LOVE it!
This Easter was a special one. I think I’ve mentioned here how special my Mom + Dad made holidays growing up. They would focus around Our Savior, Jesus Christ + kept us close as a family. Easter especially!
Watching them continue to make strides to keep us close + loveee on the grandkids makes my heart beam. Pretty surreal to all be together in the most beautiful place on earth as a family!
We flew in on Friday. Settled in Saturday morning + snuck over to Target on the way back from the beach. To our surprise, there were NO baskets left + the easter section nearly emptied by the time we got there! Kinda funny, but we still managed to pick + pull pieces together for each of the kids!
We all got to go to Church together to a local ward + Jack + Cece went up to sing on the stand with the Primary kids. Kinda neat that the Temple was right across the parking lot from the Church. This Island is about the prettiest place I have ever been! EVER.
Have you ever seen a cuter set of Grandparents!?!! Cousins sun up to sun down has been the sweetest scene. Each of the boys have asked to move here! Rigg is convinced he doesn’t need to go to school!
Hoping it stays FOREVER! these jean shorts (pictured) are my tried + true, wear everyday short. I also own them in black. + they brought them back for another round this year.
We’re headed to Kona with the entire Webb crew. + so freaking stoked about it! did you see my Instagram post about how I pack? not this time, I was packed before midnight!!
I usually get lots of questions about what i wore / packed, so thought I’d try to get ahead of the game + post my packing list here!
Thank you for all the recommendations for vertigo, feeling confident going onto the plane. I am currently using on guard + lavender oil like so many of you suggested. YOU NEVER LET ME DOWN!
We decided to snag a GoPro before this trip so we could have a camera on our hikes + out in the ocean. So stoked to see the memories we’ll capture. Buuuut, DON’T FORGET the floaty. A coworker of Jon’s lost his in the ocean.
Hit the dollar store or dollar store section at target before you go to get the kids some new toys, coloring pages, etc. for the plane! I always love to bring these sticker books + this colored pencil pack from amazon as well.
Can’t forget treats! We stocked up on our favorite gummy bears. I stash all the boys treats in individual baggies so they take up less space.
Trying out some new packing cubes. I love that these were a neutral color. So far I love them + they store in ONE bag . . . soooo small.
I don’t even know what I did before air pods. Seriously so, so nice on the plane. I can help all the kids, while still listening + not worry about the cords. GAME CHANGER! If you’re heading on a beach trip I’d recommend snagging this waterproof case.
We always pack up our Gathre mat on beach trips. Soooo nice for keeping the sand off our towels. I brought our circle mat this time.
Our favorite stroller to travel with. It folds up soooooo small.
I never leave for a trip without this chapstick. adds colors to your lips, but also provides SPF. I love the Berry color.
Gigi Pip is getting some new scrunchies, but since they’re not here yet, I snagged one from Free People. Makes throwing your hair up at the beach or pool super easy.
Gigi Pip sunglasses, hats + straw bags are always at the top of my list. stay tuned for some sneak peeks of our new straw bags!
Gamma got all the kids matching Walker Family Goods backpacks. Crying about how cute they all look carrying their bags.
We brought Jack’s car seat on the plane. We know he sleeps so good in it, so it was a guaranteed nap on a long fight.
Last time we were in Hawaii, we all got fevers. WORST THING EVER. This time, mama brought a thermostat. Ain’t no chancing that again.
WHAT’S IN OUR SUITCASE
WOMEN’S BEACHWEAR
WOMEN’S SWIM
WOMEN’S CLOTHING
WOMEN’S SHOES
BOYS SUITCASE
I always like to find shorter more fitted swim shorts for the boys. I also am all about easy shoes they can slide on themselves + rashguards so we don’t have to stress as much about reapplying sunscreen when the boys are having fun!
JONS SUITCASE
Jon could easily pack in a backpack where I could bring 3 suitcases, so I’d say we balance each other out.
One time we were in Hawaii, we had some things stollen from our car. Jon was most worried about his sandals. We had to frantically order some new $7 sandals for him. Still laughing about it. Biggest things on Jon’s list are swimsuit, rashguards (also a crazy sunscreen person) + swimsuits.
I like to think we’re doing an above average job as parents when it comes to sibling rivalry. But to be totally honest when I found out Jack was a boy (in front of alllll my friends nonetheless) I vividly remember thinking WHAT WILL I DO IF THEY FIGHT. Like fist fight fight. I grew up with one older brother + 3 younger sisters. Grateful to say we never saw a fist fight in our time.
My siblings are my best friends. They always have been! We went to all games, cleaned my dad’s office every weekend + didn’t have playdates after school. I mean we did as we got older, but when you have 4 siblings you pretty much have built in playdates!
A few ways we are trying to nip competitiveness in the boys already:
NO CHORE CHART! I’m not saying this is a golden solution, but it has helped cultivate a more teamwork environment in our home! This is the one we use + we earn stars as a family every single day!
Combined screen time. I’ll save fortnite for another day, but long story short – if they are on screens the clock starts for both of them equally! (Jack doesn’t quite understand or argue so he just goes along with it all at this point)
WRITING NOTES: Jonah (he’s going to be 8 this Sep) is suuuuper into this. We took things to the next level when I dusted off my “pull here” square note folding skills last weekend. We have a notebook that we write back + forth with.
One on One dates: seems like it could go the other way for the kids who aren’t on the date? WELLLL! There’s a kicker. The lucky kiddo who is on the date with Mom or Dad, thinks about the other siblings. I usually like to ask something that each of the brother’s have done that week that made them laugh. Together (their lead) we pick out a treat for the other siblings back home. Doesn’t have to be anything huge by any means, it just helps the others back home feel valued in an otherwise “jealous” situation. My friend Suzie told me about this + it’s made a difference.
LISTEN: to all sides of the story. Arguments are heightened when we all need sleep, but I’ve always tried hard to listen with my full attention when we are trying to problem solve by getting down on their “eye level” + repeating what they say (even if I don’t agree) afterwards. STOP being the referee. It’s hard at first but this is vital in their development + problem/resolution communication skill building.
We loooove boards games! Rigg is super good, we honestly cannot beat him at TROUBLE. Bre tried this last weekend + also failed. It’s a crazy gift I think? I dunno but I’ve never met a child prodigy like him.
These are ways I let the boys know I love them without words:
Eye Level Highs + Lows about each boy at dinner Invite them to play with me Read to them at breakfast No phones at dinner table Send a note/joke in Jonah’s lunchbox every day Secret handshakes Look them in the eye when they are talking Rigg loves to cook so I ask him for help Jonah loves to play basketball, challenge him to one v one Jack loves to snuggle + choose the songs on Spotify, we do both Jon gets a rushed welcome home (from all of us) NO MATTER WHAT every day after work We race to get seatbelts on + if the car goes into drive + someone forgets they owe the rest $1
Now just praying it sticks + I won’t live to see the day of a fist fight. I’d love to hear your thoughts on sibling rivalry, always adding ideas to my list!
+ memorial day is just around the corner but let’s get real, I wear white attire allllll year. I didn’t realize how much I love a minimal color pallet until y’all started asking me how to do it! 🙂
I didn’t realize how hard it is to style white jeans so I figured I’d tell you a couple of rules I follow: Think SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE. White jeans are bold on their own, so I try to pair them with neutral patterns. I lean more towards fun textures. As long as they aren’t the exact same shade of white (I come pretty close sometimes) it’s legal in my book! If you haven’t found your perfect white jeans yet – – – I hope this post will help! Don’t give up, because once you find them you’ll be stoked!
i wear these white linen pants almost everyday + madewell just started selling them.
my madewell white pants with buttons were my go-to, but they sold out! They’re selling a similar pair now, but i also snagged these this year from old navy + they’re under $50 (+usually on sale).
i love simple white crop tops + was super excited when i found this one for under $30. buy one get one half off right now too.
if you’ve been following me the last 3 months then you’ve seen this white blazer 9283920 times. it’s soooo good + easy to throw on with anything. I pair it with a white shirt.
i’ve been wearing this white sweater on repeat + it’s on sale today for $34.
these are my favorite sandals for hiking, swimming + chasing the boys around.
A list of loves is something I’ve been doing since my junior year of high school, only in my journal. It looks a little different there, but I thought it would be fun to bring it back to life here + share a few of my favorite things each week. Hope you don’t mind me sharing.
I’ve been doing this on my email the past couple months + it’s been super fun for me. If you haven’t subscribed be sure to here.
the cherry blossoms started to bloom, even though it feels like winter still.
I’m crossing my fingers these tevas get here before we leave for hawaii. perfect water shoes + only $40?! i got the mango color.
shopbop sale! Up to 25% alllll my favorite brands. You can find my favorites here.
finding simple rash guards additional 40% off at jcrew i stocked up for hawaii code: SALEUPGRADE
