FINDING THE BACKCOUNTRY OUTSIDE OF SAN FRANCISCO

I don’t mean to start off on a negative foot, just want to be a bit more transparent with where my mind was at leading up to this trip to the backcountry of San Francisco!! I had to fly out on Jonah’s first day of school, but booked a late enough flight that I was able to take both of them to school + walk them in. And be back home to pick them up on the third day!! Someone shared with me recently the power of replacing HAVE TO – to GET to. I’ll walk you through a play by play from our retreat! We stayed in a quaint little about an hour + a half from San Fran.

SUNRISE YOGA : We woke up at 6:45 + walked through a guided yoga flow while the rest of the world right around us was just waking up The Ocean waves were crashing below us + the birds were singing their morning songs. She encouraged us to set an intention for the trip + put reason behind our day. “DEEPER MEANING” is what I wrote down in my journal when I got back to my room.

I talked a lot about my feelings from our trip to the bay area here.

SUP at TOMALES BAY : first stop was paddle boarding with the girls in a freshwater lake.

LUNCH at SALTWATER : Salt Water is a local restaurant, (oyster friends, a must visit) that has the sweetest energy about it. The menu was home grown, cooked while we were there + open special hours for us to get to try. Once again watching the head chef really share his love for food with each of us made my heart sing.

HIKE AT WILDFLOWER TRAIL : Robyn was our tour guide + I wish I had just attached my phone to her waist as she led our hike because she was a walking talking fountain of inspiring motivation. She’s inspired me to dust off my list of hikes. She rebirthed my desire to explore my new backyard.

I’ve always been drawn to yogi’s. I crave their calming energy. I have an awwwful way of remembering coreographed anything, so it’d take some serious practice. But I enjoy learning from their talents + look forward to attending one of Lesley’s retreats someday.

SUNSET DINNER : the perfect ending for a soul-filling day. I’m not the fanciest eater. In fact, I can’t wait to get home to have a bowl of cereal after the majority of our trips. This beach-scape dinner was the cherry on top. Stayed well after the party was shut down refilling my cup with confidence that I can do hard things. I can keep going + not lose my identity when this “influencer” world is telling me how to be. Because what I’ve discovered – is that that world isn’t the one dictating my thoughts, it’s my heart.

this post is sponsored by SHOPSTYLE x BACKCOUNTRY

The way I found “DEEPER MEANING” was by submerging myself into uncharted BACKCOUNTRY. What it means on a deeper level was my real break through. But the real magic comes when I realized I’m able to take it with me wherever the adventures of the day unfolds. It’s a feeling. It’s a head space. I found my backcountry as I quietly went back to my room + facetimed the boys. I found it as I pushed through my nervous jitters at the dinner table the first night as everyone started rolling in + didn’t know a soul. Both of these brand’s desire to bring together likeminded women + create GOAT WORTHY moments was remarkable. One that I admire as a business owner myself. It’s apparent to me that what you put into relationships you get out. I love passion. Of all sorts. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to hear about passions from new friends! Grateful to have reconnected with my purpose here THIS TRIP THO.

How to choose a Home Designer

You found your lot!! The dream situation. And if you’re like us (first time home builders) you’re about to find out how many people are actually involved in designing a custom home. The word “HOME DESIGNER” is FULLY LOADED. 3 key players in our design process. I’m telling you, it takes a village, choose wisely. 🙂 We knew we wanted something no one else has. But along with that comes the tricky part of making it acutally live-able. Soooo, today we are going to show you why you’ll want a structural designer + what they’ll do for you!

Your structural designer (we chose Hyrum Bates) will be the one who is going to help you design the layout of your home, the placement of walls, ceiling dimensions, windows, fixtures, doors, exterior building materials, etc. While they may offer interior design as well, it’s not expected to be part of the structural home design! They’re not engineers and the actual “structural engineering” that you will present to the city + to your builder, will be done separately (with additional costs). A structural designer’s main goal is to give you the house of your dreams – that isn’t like anyone else’s!

I’ve mentioned that we chose our Architectural designer very early on. He’s helped us design 2 homes now. The first one didn’t get approved + after trying to salvage them the best we could, we made a mutual decision to just scrap them + start again. We all worked our tails off to get a second set of plans to pass our neighborhood Design Board + Hyrum Mckay Bates has been super patient in helping walk us through the endless adventures that come along with custom building. He walked through a window meeting with me just this last week.

We’ve put together a few interview questions for you to use as you interview architectural designers that we wish we would have had! We hope you’re able to find the perfect fit for your family!

Interview questions:

  • How will you help me save money?
  • How many revisions can I expect?
  • What kind of designs have you done before?
  • What will my final drawings look like?
  • Will I have digital renderings of the inside/outside of my house?
  • What do you charge and what’s included?- how often will we meet?- how many clients do you take on at once?
  • What’s expected of me during the process?

Tips for working with a structural designer:

  1. set a standing meeting every week
  2. review your new neighborhood’s ccnr’s and regulations at the very beginning- if possible, include your builder in the meetings
  3. set goals as to square footage and cost early on as in your conversation as well. (these can get out of control fast)
  4. Getting on the same page as early as as you can will allow your desinger to work within the context of what is realistic +/or force them to come up with different ideas that fit your style, while staying within budget.

we’re so grateful we found Hyrum Bates, they have made the whole process WAY less stressful + have been the perfect fit for our family.

Question round up from IG

DM’S are off the hook, let’s be honest. Often I’ll get asked the same question multiple times, which isn’t a big deal, I just want to be able to get back to everyone, so I wanted to house them all here for anyone curious!

THERMAL KNIT TOP | LEVI’S | LEOPARD SLIDES ($5) | HAT (similar)

WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR GREEN THERMAL TOP? snagged this bad boy at Uniqlo, in 3 other colors as well because: only $14 . Same place I got my thermal white dress ($20), I’ve had on repeat.

WHERE IS YOUR SHOWER CURTAIN FROM? even though I’m stokkkked to get rid of the shower / bath combo that we all share, I have loved our shower curtain. I can tell how much I like something if I’m not eager to swap it out anytime soon. We’ve had this one since our last home + I haven’t found one that has stuck out to me more. Suzie also helped me upholster an ottoman with the same shower curtain! It’s from Target, here is the link!

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORKOUTS? I shared a FAQ of my workouts here + just shared my workout class schedule here.

WHY ARE YOU DRINKING SO MUCH WATER? Thank you ig stranger for calling me grandma legs, you filled my insecure cup a little more. 🙂 JK, kinda. I just have crazy veins + dove into google to try to see why? The sign was dehydration? Super ironic for how much water i drink but whatever. Any other things you’d suggest? Here is the link to my gallon water bottle, that many of you are also loving!

WHERE IS YOUR FAMILY ROOM RUG FROM? I love the look of this rug so much, buuuuut one con is you’ll have to keep up on your vacuuming, it collects a lot in the tiny holes. You can snag it here, starting at $60.

Raising Confident Kids + NSALE items that are still in stock

RIGG: vans hoodie | stance socks | shorts | vans | sunglasses
G: sweater | ivory sweatshirt | jeans | vans | hat | sunglasses

My focus as a #BOYMOM this year, has been confidence. I feel this is a roll-over topic that I’ll always be striving for in our lives, but I feel responsible as their mother to help plant the roots. Wanted to share a few focus points during this pivotal time of Rigg’s education (aka starting kindergarten) that we are working on as parents to instill a confident home life

  • family dinner : we try our best to eat dinner together as a family each night. like actually sit down together + eat. seems simple, but i’m sure it’s only going to get less + less easy to do as the boys grow. we go around the table + share our highs + lows.
  • going to each other’s games : whether that be juan’s indoor soccer league, a motocross race, jonah’s basketball camp, or rigg’s puppet show talent parade, i refuse to give them the choice of attending when they are this young. when we were first married, jon wasn’t into girls volleyball. but it still killed me to miss my sisters games + he grew to love going. I pray every day that my boys are each other’s biggest support group. I want them to cheer each other on + I know they learn by example. I know they’ll naturally compete, but I hope they are able to bring each other up + be proud of their successes TOGETHER. Does that even make sense? Not sure, but it does in my head + I think this all starts by all attending each others events as much as we can. wrote down my thoughts about sibling rivalry here.
  • getting outdoors : the easiest way to get away from screen time, is to get away from it altogether. we DO watch TV in the Parrish household, I don’t want it to ever seem like we don’t. In fact, the boys would chose to play video games + watch TV all day if they could. But getting outside is never a fight (just more work on my part) + a great way to unplug.
  • let them do their thing : what if strong willed is confident. each of my boys are soooo different, but I try my best to let them keep their personality instead of changing it. turn the hard worst traits toward the future + let their best qualities shine through.
  • teaching manners, respect + self discipline : #1 Priority in our household – MANNERS. It’s the one that I often wonder if I’m making any progress, but no matter how many time I have to tell Rigg to put his dang plate in the sink after dinner, I believe that one day it’ll sink.
  • shoes without ties for kindergarten: i dunno when your kids learned to tie their shoes + this might just be me putting it off longer, but finding easy to slip on shoes with no tie or velcro has been a good way to avoid a nice lil’ confidence shatter. set them up for success if there’s a plan B option!

Thought it might be helpful to share some of the NSALE pieces that are still in stock that we bought for back to school! Prices go back up in ONE WEEK, so the count down is on. If you see your size, snag it up. Nordstrom offers free shipping + free returns.

TEES FOR BOYS:

SHORTS FOR BOYS:

SHOES FOR BOYS:

PANTS FOR BOYS:

SOCKS FOR BOYS:

Kinda crazy how fast stuff sells when it’s on sale! Remember when my dream red nike’s slipped through my hands? Still not over it. 🙂 3 cheers for happy shoppers + confident kids changing this crazy world we live in! xx

Jack’s 3rd Birthday

the year I learned who kids birthday parties are really for.

He calls BUZZ LIGHTYEAR buzxzlight (like so fast it’s almost like budlight + I can’t say it like he does)

He’s been telling people for months his motorcycle is broken. He has 2 of them, but they are broken. This is Jonah’s old bike + Jon fixed the tires. After we opened the gift from his big brothers on the front lawn, he went out back, hopped on that little blue motorcycle bike + rode until the sun went down.

things jack loves:

  • Books: Jack would sit on anyone’s lap who will read to him.
  • Cards + Games: I finally invested in some new NERTZ cards (custom from shutterfly)
  • Being called squish – “Jack is your bum cute?” No. Squishy bum.
  • Buzzlight anything + everything. The brothers picked out some jammies + we all picked out a piñata (pronounced pinky yota by the birthday boy) to break with his cousins this weekend.

things jack doesn’t love:

  • brushing his hair
  • that’s honest to goodness the only thing i can think of that he doesn’t love
You know you’re a boy mom when. . . . . .

This was my gift to Jack. I NEED A NEW BUTT BOOK. I should probably be embarrassed? Most households don’t encourage butt’s + farts, or even saying the words, buttuh, well, we laughed our freakin heads off the entire way through it.

Rigg is literally the popsicle king. We were watching old movies of Jack + Rigg had a popsicle in basically every single one. He made these LEGO ones especially for Jack’s special day.

If you have lego obsessed kiddos, snag this fun Lego Popsicle Mold.

Jack is a very very simple, loving boy who is pretty content just hanging out. He’s super chill + always up for adventures. He tells me all day long “I yuv dat mom”.

When Grandma called Jack earlier in the morning – he told her that all he wanted was a “burtday cake with candles.” She came down, met us for lunch at Maddox + most definitely pulled through. Jack devoured that cake. He’ll probably never remember this birthday, but I always will.

The year I learned that birthday party past has been for me, not for them. I mean they love it, but the over-the-top-stress-details, have they ever even noticed? I didn’t throw a party this year, not even close to anything elaborate. I didn’t order anything online or plan any outfits. I didn’t send out invites. We went about our day doing simple things that Jack adores with our dear friends + WE ALLLL HAD THE BEST DAY OF OUR LIVES. Imagine that.

While Jack + I were finishing his brother gift in the front yard, Jon went to fix the tires on our little old motorcycle bike. He’s been telling people (mostly Braedin) that he has 2 motorcycles, but they are broken in the garage. Had I known where Jon went, I would have had the camera on rapid fire when he saw that it was fixed. He hopped right on that thing + rode it until the sun went down.

A stop by the lot after dinner at Mcdonald’s

My heart feels content + proud/embarassed of how many parties over the top I’ve thrown. There’s something truly magical about simplicity. At the end of the day it leaves me even more grateful that I’m trusted to raise these incredible boys with their dad. I love them all, with ALL OF MY HEART.

welcome to 3 years of life, jack boy.

xx, Mom

Breaking ground on our Home!

AFTER 2 YEARS + a whole crap lot of house renditions later – – – WE HAVE OFFICIALLY BROKEN GROUND on #theparrishplace. Can you tell we’re excited?

We’re mostly grateful to have found a custom builder who has stuck by our side + helped us pass the CCNR’s in our old neighborhood. The plan was to have several people bid out our plans, but it’s no easy task to do that muoltiple times. We went with COOK BUILDER + he’s honestly been with us every up + down along the way. He shoots us straight + we’re grateful for that. So far so good, NOW THE REAL FUN BEGINS!

We are craving a place to let these boys roam free. To not have my anxiety soar each time they walk outside to play + I hear cars rush by. We’ve learned a lot about roots the last several months, finally time to re-plant them.

I asked Juan if it was weird if we camped in our tent on our lot until the house was ready. #excitedmuch? I’m still kinda half serious.

TOP (similar here + here) | JEANS | SLIDES

Things we are most excited for:

  • GING | NATURAL LIGHT I’d live in an entire glass house if it wasn’t creepy, a laundry room + a place to actually organize my hats + a tub that isn’t combined with the same shower we allllll use. (high maintenance, i’m aware)
  • JON | a garage to park our cars in, plenty of cold storage space, a place to put all our freaking shoes (his biggest pet peeve for sure), his own drawers
  • JONAH | walking to school, the half pipe, having his own underwear drawer + finding the secret door that we promised him. (we have zero recollection of this – – – – NATE! SOS!)
  • RIGGS | playing basketball inside, jumping on a trampoline, swimming, building a treehouse in the “forrest” + riding his bike on the jump in the road whenever he wants
  • JACK | he mostly just talks about bringing his motorcycle bike to the new house + a trampoline

Saved the sneak peek of the hole coming to life – to on our ‘home’ bubble on Instagram. Follow along in stories as we will be updating regularly!

PINTEREST is also a great place to follow along for some sneak peeks of our
ever evolving house inspo!

We hired Hyrum McKay Bates right off the bat as an architect. I knew he was a perfect fit when I saw how detail oriented he was. I knew he’d help make our crazy ideas something more timeless. I’m kinda the worst decision maker, but he hasn’t thrown in the towel. We showed up on his doorstep with our napkin drawn dream home in hand + said make this real life. He’s done it, TWICE. Looking back at our first designs is kinda funny. We basically lived in that house in our minds + hearts, so what we’ve landed on now really feels like EXACTLY what we want!

More to come soon!

eeeeeeeeeeeeek,

Drinking a gallon of water a day + INCREDIBLE Walmart FINDS

Have you been to Walmart lately!? Once Smith’s changed it’s card situation + I can’t use my VISA there anymore, I’ve been spending much more time at Walmart. They have stepped up their fashion game BIG TIME!! I’ve been a fan of this white shirt for a year or so, but have been mind blown by everything else they had to offer. Like legit got 6 outfits + had to spread the goodness because guyssss they’re FIRE EMOJI!

They even carry LEVI’S!!! I snagged these white pants + this denim jacket for wayyyy cheaper than anywhere else. I had actually tried on this same denim jacket at Anthropologie the week before + it was almost $100. At Walmart it was only $41!

this dress is $11 + HAS POCKETS! WHAT?!!! SIZE UP if you want a more oversized breezy feel!
I paired it with the same sneakers + jacket!

If you knew about the goodness of Walmart fashion + didn’t fill me in immma have to wet-willy you next time I see you, because this dress – – – $11. E LE V E N !

I also wore my black blazer (that cost literally $11) to the Roolee store grand opening at the mall + got asked where it was from FOUR TIMES! Every closet needs a fitted black blazer + I dare you to find one that fits good for less than $11! FREAKING WALMART, killllling it. Super stoked about it.

BLAZER | TEE| SNEAKERS
TEE

Lasssst but for sure not least, because my love for band tees runs deep + this one was $5. I can’t even buy a waffle with that. It’s from the men’s section + I ordered a small. #walmartdoesitagain

woah that was more of a novel than a quick shopping at walmart post, but still not over the fashion there rn. Seems to good to be true, but it ain’t. NOW LET’S CHAT WATER!

Don’t let that angle fool you, I promise the water bottle isn’t half the size of me! But it is a freaking gallon + I’ve committed to drinking a gallon of water EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. 3 for 3 + a hundred trips to pee. It’s fine!

I made the mistake of googling why I had so many varicose veins bulging out of me rn + it said dehydration. So ordered myself a gallon water bottle before I could blink. If you know me, you know I’ve always drank a ton of water – – – I always have a cup full of ice, cold water. Water totally is my drink of choice.

My top tips for drinking more water:

  • Snag a waterbottle that you can easily carry around or is the full amount of oz you want to drink that day so you can keep track
  • keep a bottle at work, home or in the car if you don’t remember to bring it in.
  • keep it cold, I drink it better if it’s cold – – – extra ice always! We are definitely re-installing a pebble ice machine in our new house. Don’t tell my dentist.
  • add a flavor if you need to. I prefer just straight water, but Jon likes to add a little sugar free flavor + claims it makes all the difference for him
  • WARNING : you will have to pee 4928392 more, so order some hand sanitizer/ get used to public bathrooms being your new BFF.
